Encountering God in Life and Mission

This is Festschrift honoring Dr. Jon Dybdahl. The title has been chosen because the book has pulled together three important elements from work and ministry of Jon Dybdahl: God, Life, and Mission. These three concepts have not been mere abstracts in Jon's life but they have influenced him and his ministry.

From the life story, written in this volume by Jon's son, we have seen a small glimpse of how Jon has encountered God in his life and how that life has been filled with a desire to make God's mission supreme in his work.

A Man with a Vision: Mission

This is Festschrift honoring Dr. Russell L. Staples. Dr. Staples is a multi-talented and broadly experienced person. He operates as a pastor and preacher, churchman and administrator, scholar and teacher, theologian and missiologist, and specialist in Arminianism and Methodism. As seen by his colleagues, he is a person of wisdom and knowledge, balance and moderation, compassion and justice, integrity and forthrightness, clarity and articulateness, strength and even-temperedness, discipline and motivation, order and ease, commitment and spirituality, denominational conviction and ecumenical understanding, graciousness and urbanity, class and commonness. His depth and spirituality have deepened and broadened the faith of his peers, pupils, and parishioners.

Working with the Poor: Selected Passages from Ellen G. White on Social Responsibility

Working for the poor is truly ministry. Disinterested benevolence is what Christians are called upon to perform.  Holistic ministry is waht Christ has taught in Matthew 25 (41-45).

It is in this context that Ellen White appeals to "all who are united with Christ" who "have received from Him the bread of life" to "impart it to other" (Ministry of Healing, p. 49). We as "His disciples are the appointed means of communication between Christ and the people" (ibid).

This compilation deals with a number of societal issues and provides several statements and counsels from Ellen G. White that can help churches to develop ministries to the whole person.

Faith Development in Context

Faith Development in Context (FDIC) is a ministry approach based on the conviction that Muslim s are committed to the God of Abraham and are truly seeking to know him. Those leading FDIC ministries believe that the Holy Spirit can lead Muslims on a pilgrimage that will result in reform movements developing from within Islam and in believers who have a biblical understanding of Isa Al Masiih.

From January 17 to 21, 2005 over one hundred church leaders, field practitioners, missiologists, and theologians gathered at Andrews University to take a serious look at the many issues and questions raised by the FDIC approach. Time was dedicated to prayer, study, discussion, reflection, and listening to what the Holy Spirit was doing in and through the various FDIC ministries. This publication shares with a larger audience the papers and responses from that conference.

Revisiting Postmodernism: An Old Debate on a New Era

This was the title of the first symposium on postmodern sensitive mission held at Andrews University, on October 18-20, 2012. This multi- and inter-disciplinary symposium sought to explore, examine and critically engage with themes and issues related to the challenges and opportunities of postmodernism to Adventist mission. It also aimed at encouraging ongoing investigation and debates on the development of mission efforts in postmodern contexts.

This symposium has served as an open forum for exploring the influence of postmodernism from different perspectives in a broad variety of contexts. Perspectives were presented from those engaged in the fields of practical theology, history, communication, philosophy, social sciences, and arts in relation to missiology. This volume presents some of the papers presented at the symposium.

The Book and the Student: Theological Education as Mission

This is a Festschrift honoring José Carlos Ramos. Theological education is about teachers enabling students, and through that process both grow, develop, and mature into the likeness of the revealed God, the object of their study. Both students and teachers learn to serve, teach, and minister in God's mission field. It is a partnership that endures--probably best evidenced when students become teachers and when both teachers and students are seriously engaged in learning and teaching from God's Word--the Book.

Adventist Responses to Cross-Cultural Mission (Volume I 1998-2001)

The 1990 General Conference session voted to establish a mission initiative called Global Mission that challenged the Adventist Church to do mission where there had been few successes in the past, to work for those in the major world religions instead of largely winning people who were already Christian, and to enter unentered areas where there were few if any Adventists.

Global Mission also established five religious study centers to pioneer new approaches for sharing the gospel with Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and secular/postmodern peoples. In response to that challenge a yearly Global Mission Issues Committee was established where papers were read and recommendations made concerning current mission issues. This book contains the papers from 1998-2001.
